Diabetes is a disease characterized by poor utilization of glucose by the body. The malfunctioning of the pancreas or insufficient insulin activity are responsible for diabetes. That prevents tissues capture and use glucose (which is vital for all body functions), mind hence its accumulation in the blood (hyperglycemia). The danger is that hyperglycemia, find after a time, buy impaired blood vessels, the heart and body tissues, in particular the eyes, kidneys and nerves.
What seems to be dangerous in this disease is, clearly, its silent and insidious, that often leads to manifest itself for the first time through its complications. Do not forget that the diagnosis of diabetes is simple and inexpensive.
But in recent decades we can see a major problem. Diabetes and obesity prevalence have increased at an alarming rate, constituting the "Diabesidad" the new epidemic of the XXI century. In fact much of this increase in diabetes is directly attributable to the obesity epidemic. If there were overweight or obese, the prevalence of diabetes would be only 1% instead of the current 8%. The odds of obesity are more worrying, because the prevalence of childhood obesity is experiencing huge increases. To imagine the scope of the epidemic, according to the WHO in 2006 had 246 million diabetics and for the year 2025 these figures would reach the 380 million diabetics.
As glycemic control of these patients deteriorates with time, diabetic patients at increased risk of complications such as retinopathy, which is the leading cause of blindness, neuropathy, nephropathy y, CHD plus, myocardial infarction and stroke. Do not forget that diabetics have twice the risk of having a heart attack or stroke compared to healthy people.
Then, therapeutic strategies include control hyperglycemia and cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, cholesterol, smoking) and the weight control along with an increase in physical activity, generating lifestyle changes in lifestyle.
